CPO’s Climate and Societal Interactions (CSI) Division partnered with the Local2030 Islands Network, the U.S. Department of State, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Esri to launch a new Community of Practice (CoP) on Data for Climate Resilience on January 27, 2021, with sessions taking place throughout the day in different time zones to facilitate participation across the Pacific and Caribbean regions. The goal of the CoP is to enhance the capacity of island economies to identify, track and measure progress on local sustainability and climate goals through peer-to-peer learning, sustained engagement and public-private partnerships that reflect local island values.

The January kick-off meeting served as an initial scoping event to share information about the Local2030 Islands Network, share challenges and opportunities for integrating climate knowledge in sustainable development, highlight case studies featuring the development of climate indicators and innovative dashboards, and identify potential topics of interest to CoP participants. Over 100 participants from 20 island nations and international organizations attended the virtual event, as well as individuals from U.S. islands and territories (e.g., Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico). Speakers and moderators included representatives of the Global Island Partnership (GLISPA), Guam Green Growth, Hawaii Green Growth, NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, NOAA’s Physical Sciences Laboratory, the Pacific RISA Team, the U.S. Department of State, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Esri. This CoP is the second launched by the Local2030 Islands Network – the first is focused on Resilience and Clean Energy Systems – and it will be one of several established by the initiative in the coming year. The Local2030 Islands Network is a global network of islands working together to advance the development of locally-driven, culturally-informed UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Lisa Vaughan of CPO represents NOAA in the international partnership that supports the Local2030 Islands Network.
