Years of Maritime Continent and PISTON Campaign Webinar Series
The NOAA Climate Variability and Predictability (CVP) Program is hosting a webinar series on the Years of the Maritime Continent that will highlight the recent results from CVP-funded projects. The goal of the "Years of the Maritime Continent (YMC)" is to expedite the progress of improving understanding and prediction of local multi-scale variability of the MC weather-climate system and its global impact through observations and modeling exercises. The webinar series will be ten biweekly sessions running from September 10, 2020 to March 11, 2021, with a break for the winter holidays. Webinars will feature two, 20-minute presentations per session, with time for questions. You can find the webinar schedule on the full webinar page. Presentations will be recorded and preserved there as well.
These webinars will be recorded and the video will be available on this page after the presentation. We look forward to your participation in this series.

YMC is a multi-agency, multinational study led by NOAA, co-supported by NOAA/CVP, NSF, NASA, and DOE with partners BMKG and JAMSTEC. PISTON is an ONR-led campaign, co-supported by CVP.
The surface and upper-atmosphere structure of the MJO for a period when the enhanced convective phase (thunderstorm cloud) is centered across the Indian Ocean and the suppressed convective phase is centered over the west-central Pacific Ocean. Horizontal arrows pointing left represent wind departures from average that are easterly, and arrows pointing right represent wind departures from average that are westerly. The entire system shifts eastward over time, eventually circling the globe and returning to its point of origin. Climate.gov drawing by Fiona Martin.
