Three NOAA CAP/RISA teams co-developed the Climate Hazard and Mitigation Planning (CHaMP) tool

Three NOAA CAP/RISA teams (the former Carolinas, the Great Lakes, and the Mid-Atlantics RISAs) along with the NOAA-funded Northeast Regional Climate Center (NRCC) co-developed the Climate Hazard Mitigation and Planning (CHaMP) Tool with the Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN). The CHaMP tool is an interactive website that is designed to communicate potential vulnerabilities to residents and authorities responsible for mitigation along with helping local hazard mitigation, infrastructure, and land use planners integrate climate into their planning efforts. The tool provides users with a single point of access to county and regional specific historical climate and hazard data and projected climate information, displaying climate metrics, hazard data, and hazard impacts for downloadable data visualizations and explanatory text. CHaMP was developed with consideration for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) guidelines for grantees producing Hazard Mitigation Plans (HMP), and aims to inform local decision making based on the best available data. CHaMP’s data are updated monthly through the NRCC.
