Laura Petes, Ecosystem Science Advisor for the NOAA Climate Program Office, is a newly elected member of the Global Young Academy (GYA). The GYA works to impact global science policy by improving the effectiveness of science, including in developing countries, by building links between young scientists from different nations.
Recognized as the “voice of young scientists around the world,” the GYA’s current members include young scientists from 54 countries and all continents. Petes is among the 4 U.S. scientists to be selected out of this year’s 46 new members. During her four-year term, she will have the opportunity to meet and collaborate with colleagues across borders, cultures, and disciplines through international meetings, workshops, and conferences organized by the GYA. Petes hopes to work with GYA members on developing pathways and opportunities for enhancing integration of science into decision and policy making.
Through GYA, members are linked to the senior international academy network, meet outstanding leaders of the international science community, and may be nominated to contribute to international policy statements and working groups. GYA members gain new insights and empowering experiences that are unavailable at their national level or within the boundaries of their discipline. They are at the vanguard of the international young scientists’ movement and form a strong voice to impact global development for more effective science around the world, through better connectedness, improved measures of achievement, and higher-quality science education and outreach.
