The Adaptation Sciences (AdSci) Program

Beginning in FY 2021, NOAA’s CSI Division will support a new research portfolio: The Adaptation Sciences (AdSci) Program.

In response to rapidly increasing demand for methods to advance climate adaptation and resilience strategies, and leverage NOAA sciences and services, CSI is launching a new Adaptation Science (AdSci) research program. The AdSci Program will help advance the knowledge, methods and frameworks needed to move society beyond incremental adaptation toward more widespread, connected, adaptive pathways, and resilience strategies with clear economic and societal co-benefits. Research will focus on the integration of acute and chronic stressors that occur over multiple timescales. NOAA Research, in the context of its commitment to improved service development, delivery, and integrated information services through innovative science, is well placed to advance science in support of adaptation.

Coastal and Ocean Climate Applications (COCA)

COCA addresses the needs of decision-makers dealing with pressing climate-related issues in coastal and marine environments. The program is designed to support interdisciplinary teams of researchers in the development and transition of climate-related research and information to advance the resilience of coastal communities and coastal and marine ecosystems.

International Research and Applications Project (IRAP)

IRAP supports international activities to link climate research and assessments to practical risk management, development and adaptation challenges in several regions throughout the world.

Sectoral Applications Research Program (SARP)

SARP addresses the needs of specific stakeholder(s) within key socioeconomic sectors grappling with pressing climate-related issues. Current funded research efforts are focused on water resources and extreme events as well as the Coping With Drought initiative in support of NIDIS.

Climate and Fisheries Adaptation Program (CAFA)

The Climate and Fisheries Adaptation Program (CAFA) is a partnership between the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (NOAA Research) Climate Program Office, and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) Office of Science and Technology that supports targeted research to promote adaptation and resilience of the nation's valuable fisheries and fisheries-dependent communities in a changing climate. By bringing together NOAA scientists with many partners, CAFA addresses priority needs for information and tools identified in the NOAA Fisheries Climate Science Strategy, Regional Action Plans, and other sources.
