CPO staff to demonstrate integrated climate science and service capabilities at 2016 American Meteorological Society annual meeting in New Orleans

The upcoming American Meteorological Society (AMS) annual meeting, with "Earth System Science in Service to Society" as a guiding theme, will see many presentations by CPO staff, demonstrating the breadth and mission-orientation of CPO's programs and integrated information systems.

Juli Trtanj (CPO) and Michelle Hawkins (NWS) address a delegation from India regarding NOAA's role and plans for Heat Health and Climate Preparedness

Juli, as well as Michelle Hawkins (NWS), attended a High-Level Knowledge Leadership Exchange Forum on Heat Health and Climate Preparedness in New York City on September 16th.The knowledge sharing and relationships from this forum will support expanded engagement between NOAA and domestic and international partners as we develop the US National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS).

Every day, we see communities grappling with environmental challenges due to unusual or extreme events related to climate and weather. In 2011, the United States experienced a record high number (14) of climate- and weather-related disasters where overall costs reached or exceeded $1 billion. Combined, these events claimed 670 lives, caused more than 6,000 injuries, and cost $55 billion in damages. Businesses, policy leaders, resource managers and citizens are increasingly asking for information to help them address such challenges.
