NOAA Climate and Global Change postdoctoral fellowship alumna Tami Bond receives MacArthur Genius award

mcarthur

The most recent recipient of MacArthur Genius grant, Tami Bond is a professor at University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign and a world renowned expert on black carbon aerosol (soot) – its emissions, chemical and physical properties, as well as its significant impact on climate.  In particular, Professor Bond’s research focuses on laboratory and field measurements of black carbon emissions from various burning sources and its physical and optical properties.

Bond received her Ph.D. from University of Washington, and subsequently was awarded a NOAA Climate and Global Change postdoctoral fellowship (Alumni Class 2010) to continue her research at NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) with Dr. Patricia Quinn.

More recently, in 2013, Prof. Bond led a large international assessment of current scientific knowledge of black carbon. Co-authored by many international colleagues, including several scientists from NOAA, this assessment is an important contribution to our knowledge of climate effects of black carbon.

To quote from the official citation: “With implications ranging from local action to international policy assessments of climate impact, Bond’s work has the potential to unlock the role of energy in our climate system and to help millions breathe cleaner air.”
