A team of scientists partially funded by CPO's Atmospheric Chemistry, Carbon Cycle, & Climate (AC4) program published a Chemical Reviews article on the chemistry of atmospheric "brown carbon,"-- the atmospheric aerosol contributing to the brown color of smoggy air.
The authors, including Dr. Alexander Laskin (PNNL), Dr. Julia Laskin (PNNL) and Dr. Sergey Nizkorodov (UCI), presented a comprehensive summary of field observations, laboratory experiments, and modeling studies describing the potential effects of brown carbon on air pollution and climate.
According to the authors, brown carbon could be a key contributor to both air pollution and climate change. The scientists recommended topics for further research and outlined strategies to curb negative effects of brown carbon on the climate and the environment and improve modeling techniques.

Combined, these events claimed 670 lives, caused more than 6,000 injuries, and cost $55 billion in damages.
